By Mary Emma Allen Will you be a mother who's remembered fondly by your children when they're grown? Will you be a mother who affects their lives in ways they'll recall with love and laughter? A family can be close and create fond memories by sharing and doing things together. However, it's often to the mother that the task falls of initiating family activities and pleasures her children will engage in with their children in future years. Incidents From Your Childhood Do you recall incidents and traditions from your childhood you want to share with your children and create a feeling of family continuity? I realize now that Mother often must have had work to do. But she took time from her busy day as a farmwife for walks and picnics with us four children, doughnut making feasts, story sessions at bedtime, swimming in the brook in summer, and listening to us and talking with us when we had problems or secrets to share. Looking back, I never remember her remarking, "No, I'm too busy," although she must have said it many times. The memorable times we shared together far overshadowed the times she had to refuse. Fun With Your Family My daughter and I engaged in some of these activities as I shared with her my childhood experiences. It helps to bring a continuity to the generations as a child realizes he/she's sharing in a long line of family traditions. Just possibly the enjoyment of these childhood activities and family highlights will be remembered by their children when they have families of their own. I've heard my daughter say to her son and daughter, "When I was little, I used to do this...just like Nanny and Great Grandma did." As I look around the happy faces at my husband's family reunions, I realize that it was mainly because of my mother-in-law's efforts that the family now has many memories to bind them together. Families Need Sense of Belonging Families need a sense of belonging, a sense of doing things together that makes them part of a long line of families. In these days, when the family unit is battered on all sides, it's often the mother who can do so much to make for her family a haven at home, a place of happiness and security, a place which will stir fond memories as the children recall the incidents that formed their lives because of their memorable mother. Thank you for sharing your talents the Lord has blessed you with. My dad didn't have any sons to pass along the tie knot to but he has passed down a wonderful legacy to his two daughters of love and being a good neighbor. May our wonderful Lord continue to bless and keep you. Bruce is a senior in high school who was recently seriously injured in a skiing accident while on a retreat with the youth group from our church. He suffered serious head injuries from hitting a tree. Please pray for his parents as well. Thank you. Mark mark_e@swrinc.com Dear Friends and Prayer Partners, Thank you again for you wonderful responses to my last update, which included an email from Jenny. Your prayers, truly, have made a difference. However, I must request further prayer for Jenny, as she has another infection in the ear that was operated on. She is now on a stronger antibiotic, and we are hopeful that this course will take care of this recent infection. I have learned a great deal, through this family crisis, about trusting God with all my heart, no matter the outcome. It is a temptation, for some, in these times, to treat prayer as though it were fast food...say a prayer...expect the outcome, NOW! But I am learning so much about patience and submission to the greater wisdom and understanding of a loving, Soverign God. Just the other day, I received an email for prayer, with a list of names and email addresses, pages long. I felt daunted and overwhelmed, yet I knelt down and I prayed for those people, asking God to meet all their needs. At the same time, I felt a witness from God, having a profound awareness, for just a split second, of how many prayers go up to God, minute by minute, and He hears them all. I don't think I have ever understood, so clearly, how small we are and how big and powerful He is. It made me want to tiptoe to the throne of grace, and throw myself at His feet and just praise Him. I remember when I was a lost sheep, and just think, He left the saved, and He came to find ME! Thank You, Jesus! May God bless you, this day. May He meet all your needs; and may He lift you up, wherever you are. Thank you with all my heart! They loved it, to say the least! Within thirty seconds my mom was crying and my dad did too. They said it was the best Christmas gift we could have given them!! You did such a beautiful job! They were so surprised and so touched--they really, really, really loved it. Thanks for helping to make it so special to us all. My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect for the video too!
