A Letter to our President

To Our President,
Before last Tues., Sept 11, 2001, if I'd been asked
what it meant to be an American, my answer
would have been something such as this...
That it meant freedom of expression, or freedom of
speech ... I would have said that it meant that
I could remember days in elementary school
when I stood at my desk along with classmates,
hands over hearts as we recited "Pledge of Allegiance"
(before they stopped doing that) every morning
before class... I would have said that it meant
having to learn about the State and Federal
Government (including having to recite "We the
People") before graduating from 8th grade and my
senior year of high school... I would have said that
it meant campaigns every four years ... listening
to my father as he tried to explain to me the importance
of one person's vote (I never understood),
inaugurations, agendas and lots of talk of taxes,
reforms, and political parties. None of which
were much of an interest to me.
As I said, if you'd asked me before Sept 11, 2001, that
would have been my answer. However, in just
a short seven days the world has changed, as
has my answer.
I still don't understanding the myriad of differences
among the political parties, but that doesn't matter
anymore... What does matter is this...
To be an American is a special gift, one that I
have to admit I took for granted for much of my
26 years. I never realized what the flag, that is now
at half staff around the country, really meant or that
in a time of extreme tragedy, that seeing it could
come as such a comfort. I never thought there
would come a day when I would truly learn the
definition behind the word "patriotism", but I have now.
My only regret is that it took such an awful
image to make me understand.
To be an American is to be proud of this country
in which we live, appreciative of the freedoms that
have been given to us and thankful for the
constant reminders that even in the worst time
in our nation's history, there is still good in the
world, which is evidenced by the
volunteers/families/citizens who have given so
much over the past week.
It is to believe and have faith in you, our
President, that we will overcome that which could
have shattered us.You have led us through
the darkest of nights, and as an American I say
thank you for all you have done and all you will do,
we will never forget...

My name is Jennifer and I'm from St. Louis, MO.
I'm a LPN and work with retired Sisters of St. Joseph
of Carondelet. I love my job but have also loved
to write. I don't write all the time, just when
something comes to me that I feel I need to put
down on paper so I won't forget. September 11th
is a day that I know none of us will ever forget.
To those responsible for that horrible day, it was supposed
to be a day that would bring us to our knees. Instead it
was a day that brought us closer together.

helmet. You show up at practice and then either
steal the ball and make us chase you to get it
back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate
times.' It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I
thought something is brewing inside the head of this
Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of
raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt
the handcuffs go on."

REQUESTS:
Michael, this week a good friend died. I am not going into work this morning, will go in to work later in the day. Her funeral is this morning. She leaves a loving husband, a daughter and a son. They all need to be held up in prayer. Her name was Bobby Jane Nokes. She was a very special lady and will be missed by all of us, her friends and family. She was only 57. They say she had a stroke. It is so hard to believe that she is gone.

On September 26th, I lost my baby at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Unfortunately, my baby lost his life at 10 weeks. In my heart I believe my baby was a boy, so I have named him Matthew (which means a gift from God). Please pray for my family and myself as we are going through a very difficult time.
