On Vernon Street

It was warm and dark, and the stars were twinkling
that night as I sat outside on my front deck on
Vernon Street. I was thinking back about this
house that I had lived in for sixteen years, and
would be leaving tomorrow forever. I found it
amazing that I despised this house for so long.
Now, as I prepared to leave and embark upon
a new adventure and a new life, I was filled with
love for this little home.
This place had heard the squeals and laughter of
our five babies. Here was the place where they
took their first steps, prayed their first prayers.
The house had seen to it that we were a close-knit
family by being just what it was -- a small house.
We had painted, papered, put up new sheet rock,
vinyl siding and new windows until the place was
hardly recognizable, but I began to wonder just
how much this small house had to do in making
my family what it was that night.
I guess the place had really done well by us.
We began here with one baby, then two, and
that filled our bedrooms. Along came the third
child, and we put the two girls into one bedroom.
When baby number four arrived, we converted
the breezeway and garage into living space,
and we kept the baby in our spacious new
garage/bedroom. When child number five
came on the scene, we moved the oldest boy
to a "bedroom" in the basement (formerly the
playroom). I guess we were bursting at the
seams. We didn't have a dining area large
enough for all of us to sit at the same table,
so we put the little ones in the high chairs and
we ate on our laps in the living room. A lot of
living was done in that small room. No matter
where I went in that house, I could hear every
single word spoken. We loved in that house.
We grew so very close to each other there.
While sitting out on my deck, I could hear my
older two when they were small. They played
barbershop and spaceship, conducted orchestras
and learned to read here. We home schooled for
six years in this little place. Babies were special
in this home. The older children learned to love
their younger siblings and cared for them like
second parents. The babies thought they had
more than one momma and daddy. Oh the love
that grew in this house!
We watched our children grow there, and when
the older two entered a private, Catholic high
school, we all realized that their friends from
school had much larger and nicer and more
expensive homes. The children were embarrassed
to invite their friends over because they felt poor
when comparing our small place to the estates
their schoolmates lived in. Of course it was silly,
but now when I look back on that little house I
realize that were it not for the humble home we
lived in, we would not be who we are today. We
owe that house a lot of thanks, and we know that
God had us there so that we would all appreciate
the home we have today. We are grateful in a way
that was made possible by that small beginning in
our little house ... on Vernon Street.

D. Anne resides in Northwest Indiana with her
husband of 22 years and her wonderful children
who range in age from 21 to 7 years old. Life has
not always been easy for the Jones family, but is
getting better every day! Anne and her husband
are full-time parents and part-time artists who love
to paint and draw. They met in a high school art
class, and have been in love ever since. She writes
about things that move her heart, and that usually
involves some aspect of her family or loved ones.

Thank you for expressing this so well. Since I am old enough to remember WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War and traveled abroad enough to learn to appreciate all we take for granted, I have long been patriotic. I am so sorry that you younger generation had to learn it in such a tragic way first hand.

Thank you for all the prayers for my daughter Ashalee. She has come home after experiencing a brush with the court system. She has a lot of work to do to catch up and graduate. It is encouraging to know she is home.
Please keep her in your prayers as she continues to deal with being a teen and wanting to be an adult.
