One of my basketball players had a really bad today... She has one of those mile-long country driveways that take her out to the main road, and she had a little trouble staying on it. In fact she had a lot of trouble staying on it and ended up in the cornfield. In her defense, we had snow and sleet last night so I am sure the road was slippery, and it had nothing to do with the fact that she just started driving a few months ago. Then at school she playfully pushed a young man into the wall as they were walking in the halls in between classes. Which is usually not that big of deal, unless of course that young man's shoulder should bump up against the fire alarm. Then it tends to become a bigger deal...(She didn't get in trouble though, since it was an accident...) Then after school, she accidentally sets off the car alarm of her friends car... And to top everything off, she comes back to the school later for basketball practice and has to deal with me as her coach.
Of course I can't mention her name, since that would embarrass her, but her initials are: Lindsey Monroe. Oops! Sorry Lindsey! Don't worry. I'm sure I remembered to only send this part to you and not the thousands of people in the thirty or so different countries that SFTH reaches around the world..... Then again I am pretty scatterbrained this time of the year...
May you have a much better day tomorrow....and drive safely!

Just thought I would share two shorter articles today by one of our favorite writers Mary Emma Allen....
Hope you enjoy!

REFLECTIONS ON NOVEMBER
By Mary Emma Allen
November comes between the brilliant colors of October and the snowy days
of December. It offers a lull between seasons and gives us a chance to
prepare for winter.
This is the season of cold-looking purple-tinged clouds and lavender-hued
mountains after a brilliant sunset. It's also a time of steel gray skies
and bitingly chilly air.
The frost nips at us in the early morning, and the woodstove in the
living room throws out a welcome warmth.
We haul wood inside the cellar and check the house to make sure windows
are tight. This is the time of year Father took off the window screens,
put the storm windows on, and placed hay along the outside of the cellar
foundation as insulation.
Each season has its magic, its unique characteristics, and November's is
the promise of Thanksgiving with Christmas not far away. We begin
getting out the holiday recipes and plan for those days when we,
children and grandchildren will enjoy cooking favorite recipes and enjoying
family festivities together.

I'M THANKFUL FOR......
By Mary Emma Allen
My wonderful family as we support one another in a multigenerational
household.
When others learn of three generations living under our roof, they either
remark, "How do you do it?" or "Just like the 'old' days when Grandma
lived with us."
Due to a family member's illness, we've joined forces to help and
encourage one another. Even though our household may at times be
confusing, it's filled with love. The joy of having our grandchildren as
part of our lives, when they could be living hundreds of miles away, is
something we're grateful for.
We've found that even though our grown children and we might prefer
separate households, with prayer and patience, we can get along and
enrich one another's lives.
With Thanksgiving approaching, we have much to be thankful for as our
family member's health improves. Although life and health may never
return to what we once considered "normal," we're pleased we can build
relationships that some families never experience.

Michael,
The essay about my grandchildren and my mom, "Generation to
Generation," was published by the e-zine, The Ribbon, after it was in Straight From
the Heart. Yesterday I received a request from the editor of an upcoming book on Alzheimer's. She saw "Generation to Generation" in The Ribbon and wants to use it in her book. We never know what may happen when we have an article/story/essay published.
I also received such a volume of mail from Straight From the Heart readers and The Ribbon readers. Now the essay may go on to help encourage others through this book. Thanks for being part of this.
Also, I want to thank the Straight From the Heart readers for writing me. I tried to answer all the mail I received but may not have gotten back to all of you yet. A writer really appreciates it when readers take the time to write and share.

REQUESTS:
Someone on the list wanted to share this link about Breast Cancer with everyone. I can't remember who sent it to me, but wanted to make sure I shared with everyone.

Michael,
the prayer request for Michael Novenche is true but here is an update; this part hasn't been passed on so this prayer request is still being passed around as if it had recently happened.
(Update 9/20/00) According to Michael's Uncle, Mark Novenche, there is some good news today...although the prayers are still needed. Little Michael had his most recent checkup and there is evidence that the remnant of the tumor has decreased in size. Mark said this is Michael's six-month check since the surgery and that it would have been good news if there had simply been no change, no further growth. For there to be shrinkage of the tumor is not only good news, but a type of news that few people outside of Michael's praying family and friends would have anticipated when they got mostly bleak news at the time the tumor was first discovered.
Blessings,
Karen Smith

As mentioned earlier, my husband and I have been trying to have any children
for a long, long time.
Our medical conditions causing infertility have the following names:
incompetent uterus (me) and very low sperm count plus retrograde ejaculation
(him).
On his latest sperm-count test, Andrew now turns out to have a very
*high* sperm count, but the sperm don't actually work. Also, he and I still
have the other conditions mentioned.
I am almost 38 (Andrew is almost 49), so the longer that nothing
happens, the more and more likely it gets that nothing can *ever* happen.
Please pray for us. If at all possible, we want to do it without test
tubes.
Kate & Andrew

"I thought of you first after my family sat down to watch the video we gave them. They loved it, to say the least! Within thirty seconds my mom was crying and my dad did too. They said it was the best Christmas gift we could have given them!! You did such a beautiful job! They were so surprised and so touched---they really, really, really loved it. Thanks for helping to make it so special to us all. My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect for the video too! Thanks again!"
