Sirens, the flashing lights of emergency vehicles, missiles flying, people crying and dying signal a dreaded increase in violence in that strategic region, making an unpleasant atmosphere for celebrating the season when we sing about peace on earth. "Jerusalem" means city of peace or foundation of peace, but the history of that troubled city is one of war and destruction. The sounds of battle have been heard in Jerusalem for centuries. From the siege of David in 1000 B.C. to the present, the city of peace has experienced 46 sieges and 32 partial destructions. It has been burned to the ground five times. Today, the control of Jerusalem remains one of the most puzzling political, religious and military problems in the world. But it is not the only one. Wars and rumors of wars have besieged the people of the earth through the centuries, fulfilling a key prophecy of the One whose birth we celebrate at Christmas (Matthew 24:6-7). Speaking of Christmas, whatever happened to peace on earth? During another troubled Christmas season, I wrote: "The angels came announcing peace The night of Jesus' lowly birth; Yet trouble here still does not cease, And wars and wrongs remain on earth. Where is this peace on earth for men That rang so sweet on Bethlehem's hills, that sent the shepherds seeking then The Savior who would cure their ills?" What's the answer to the reasonable rhyming question? Peace loving people want to know. According to the Bible, peace is available in three dimensions: peace with God, the peace of God and world peace. The last of these treasures awaits fulfillment, but the first two have been discovered and experienced by millions. Billy Graham's first best-selling book, "Peace with God," explained the reason for the lack of personal peace to be the sins that have separated us from God and pointed readers to faith in Christ to remedy the problem. Paul, who had terrorized Christians while a troubled man himself, agreed, saying we are justified through faith and as a result have peace with God (Romans 5:1). The peace of God goes a step further, bringing peace when everything about us seems to be falling apart. To achieve this, I start each day quoting the Bible formula for a peaceful life (Philippians 4:6-8), which simply says we're to worry about nothing and pray about everything. In his famous carol, "O Little Town of Bethlehem," Phillips Brooks emphasizes the simplicity of faith by urging us to receive peace as a gift that is all wrapped up in the Prince of Peace. He is saying, "Receive God's gift by faith and have a peaceful Christmas," even in troubled times: "How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given: So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven, No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in." Hi Michael, Just had to write and tell you how much I enjoyed the story today. So powerful, and I wrote Roger and told him so. He is a jewel. Hilma Alhstorz@aol.com Oh Michael -- another good story about the love of our Lord to show Roger what a dear family he helped out. I marvel at the miracle that is too. Yep Santa is one smart fellow. God bless - MC romans83839mc@juno.com PS I recycle my Christmas cards every year and give where I feel led to with the money I save. This year it is to a needy family -- a Christmas meal plus a few extra's. But I do HAVE to put in a few coins every time I pass a kettle also. My parents would give me a roll of pennies as a child so I wouldn't miss putting a penny in each one. I was thrilled the year they gave me a roll of nickels -- inflation!! Amen!!!! for your story. May the love of giving keep on growing!!!!!! Pat Sewell ps513@webtv.net I feel like I know Roger, from all of our correspondence and his stories, and I did buy his book! My, what a wonderful gift God gave US in Roger Dean Kiser, Sr.! Kinda like the watch-- he took what he had-- a horror story of a life, and gave it to us in the form of stories that put our lives into perspective again and again! Merry Christmas! They loved it, to say the least! Within thirty seconds my mom was crying and my dad did too. They said it was the best Christmas gift we could have given them!! You did such a beautiful job! They were so surprised and so touched--they really, really, really loved it. Thanks for helping to make it so special to us all. My mom mentioned how the songs were perfect for the video too!
