LIVING OUT YOUR COURAGE "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the think which you think you cannot." Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is when you choose to acknowledge your fear, and look it in the face. What are you afraid of? Everyone is afraid of something. Are you afraid of failure? Afraid of what might happen if everyone knew that you, Mr. Perfect, got an F in Science? Are you afraid you might be shunned if everyone knew that your parents were divorced, or your dad was an alcoholic, or you're not really what you say you are? What are you afraid of? If you don't face your fear head-on, it will never go away. Often, it's our fear that keeps us where we are and prevents us from getting close to God and to others. God can use our fear to remind us of our need for him. We need to forget about ourselves and focus on others. If you have a fear of the unknown, go on a mission trip to a country where you've never been. If you are afraid of failure, try something new that you may not be good at. It's important to acknowledge and confront our fears so we can move past them. Breaking free from fear is one of the most liberating feelings in the world. By liberating yourself from fear, you open the door of your mind, allowing the room once occupied by fear to be filled with creativity and passion. And when creativity and passion come in and clean things out, you are able to care about more than yourself and your own fears. And that is a good thing. "Be strong and courageous. Q: Some people try to discredit Genesis by saying snakes don't eat dust, as Genesis 3:14 claims. So is the Bible in error? A: Although we don't know for sure that the serpent referred to in Genesis 1 really was the same as a snake, we do know that snakes do eat dust! After the serpent deceived Eve, God cursed it, saying, "On your belly you shall go and you shall eat dust all the days of your life." And since most people don't realize that many snakes eat dust, they use this as a reason not to take Genesis literally. See, a snake has an organ in the roof of its mouth called "Jacobson's organ" that helps the snake smell. Here's how it works: with its darting, forked tongue, the snake picks up bits of dust and pulls them into its mouth. Once the dust is inside the mouth, a pair of sensory organs takes over and the snake is able to smell the trail for possible prey. The point is, no matter what the serpent was, nothing contradicts the Bible's clear statements in Genesis. --The Youth Church of Faith Community Church in Janesville, WI If you are in 6-12th grade and live in the southern Wisconsin/northern Illinois area and would like to check us out, we meet every Sunday night from 6:30-8:00 PM at Faith Community Church which is located at 2931 Lucerne Dr. in Janesville, WI. (About 3 blocks south-east of the old Skating Place.) All-Stars: 6:30 - 8:00 PM Sunday nights! Open to all youth grades 9-12. The Outlet: 6:30 - 8:00 PM Sunday nights in the Multi-Purpose Room! Open to all youth grades 6-8.
New Series on Creation and the Authority of the Bible! February 25: Dinosaurs & Noah's Ark
6:30 - 8:00 PM Wednesday nights (September though May) These groups are limited to no more than ten teens and are split into Jr. High and High School ages. This night is for those teens who want to dig deeper than what we do in All-Stars, but may not be ready to be a part of the Xtreme Teens. These cell groups will also be doing special activities with each other as the year goes on to build community. Jr. High age meets at the church and are led by Kent and Rachel Martin High School age are led by Tedi Knox: 2816 Blackbridge (Call 305-0318 if you have any questions!)
Xtreme Teens meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 8:00 PM all year round at the Powers' house. This group is very extensive with weekly homework, memorization, service projects, etc. Students interested in this group will have to fill out an application, provide references as to why others think they should be involved with this, and sign an agreement as to what is expected of them. Admission into Xtreme Teens is on a case by case basis. Contact Pastor Michael for more details! |
