Guess where? In my college psychology class, of all places. For days our professor had been going on and on about different experiments. I listened and took notes, not so much because I cared, but because I wanted to pass the class. Then I got it. In between hearing about dogs salivating, children playing with dolls, and television violence, the prof talked about an experiment that I'll call "The Scarface Project." Some researchers called a bunch of people into their offices and explained, "We want to see how strangers respond to you when you have a scar on your face. So we're going to take each of you into a separate room and use make-up to put a big, red scar on your left cheek." So every person went into their own small room. There were only five things in each room: the make-up, the person doing the make-up, the person getting the scar, and two chairs for them both to sit on. Notice anything missing? Think hard. Got it yet? How about a mirror? The people getting the scars on their faces couldn't see what was happening to them. Once the make-up person was done, they held up mirrors so that folks could see their scars. Then each make-up person took back the mirror and said, "Now I'm going to put a little finishing powder on your scar just so it doesn't smear." But here's the trick: instead of putting finishing powder on their scars, the make-up people actually used a tissue to remove the scar. So now people thought they had a scar, but that had no scar. The Scar-less people went out into the lobbies of doctors' offices, hotels, and airports. Overwhelmingly, the Scar-less folks came back and reported that people were rude and less kind to them. Plus they said people stared at their scar! Think about it. The Scar-less people thought something was wrong with them physically, and that everyone else noticed it and acted differently. In reality, it was all in their imagination. That's kind of like thinking everybody notices your bad hair day, or your zits, or the bar-b-q sauce stain on your shirt. Frankly, everyone else is so worried about their own bad hair, zits, and stains that they don't have time or energy to notice yours. Think about it... * When was the last time you didn't like how you looked? Why? Taken from "Mirror, Mirror", copyright 2003, Youth Specialties/Zondervan. Used by permission. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,
My teenager was headed to school one morning when I told him that the neck tag on his shirt was hanging out. "I know," he replied. "It's a fad me and some of the guys started." Weeks later, as the style persisted, I commented, "I can't stand it! Every time I see that, I want to fix it for you." I gently tucked the tag in place and rumpled his hair. "Yeah," he said smiling slyly. "All the girls do."
"One thing you can never find in a teenager's room is the floor."--Bruce Lansky
"Perform the best you can for when you find that you perform your best, there is still so much more in volleyball to do better, harder, faster, and smarter. It is just like when you go for a long journey. You go as far as you can see, and when you get there, you can see farther." --John Kessel
"Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul - chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth!"
Sound familiar? Probably. You (and millions of other young women) are buying into what our image-oriented society says you should look like--and how you measure up to others. "Mirror, Mirror" will blow the top off of what you think and believe about beauty, self-image, acceptance, health, sex, God's love, and more. Filled with cool tips, fun-facts, quizzes, tough discussion questions, surveys, real-life stories and confessions, this is the book for setting the record straight on who God created you to be! You can find "Mirror, Mirror" at:
